Owing to the intangibles involved, planning and control of logging operations are very difficult. In the system described, the elements of a work cycle and influencing variables are first determined. Time-study data are then collected by a reliable sampling scheme and analyzed statistically. A control system based on a mathematical model is then established. The application of this system increased pulpwood hauling production and mechanical equipment by an average of 40 percent and sometimes as much as 75 percent.
