A surface preparation technique was developed to enhance the measurement of grain angles on the surface of a wood specimen, particularly in the vicinity of the branch/trunk interface. The results of this investigation indicate that a four-step surface preparation technique was most effective in achieving this objective. The procedure identified consisted of 1) dimensional stabilization of the specimen using polyethylene glycol; 2) planing the specimen surface; 3) scraping the specimen surface; and 4) application of a semigloss polyurethane finish. While this surface preparation technique was found to be especially effective in increasing the determination of grain angle measurements in the vicinity of the branch/trunk interface, it was unable to facilitate the determination of grain angle measurements in the region immediately adjacent to the branch/trunk interface zone.
