The tree-grading system reported here is one that is easily applied by timber appraisers. First, the grader measures the DBH and merchantable height of the tree. He then determines which 10-foot section of the butt 16-foot log has the highest log grade. Usually, the best 10-foot section can be selected easily by noting the grading defects on the log. After the 10-foot grading section has been determined, it is visually divided into four full-length faces of equal width. The grade of the second poorest face determines the grade of the tree. Net tree volume is multiplied by the tabular per centage of the lumber grades predicted for a tree of that size and grade. The end-product of this tree grading system can be applied to any price structure at any time without the necessity of checking and adjusting lumber price ratios.
