Abrasive planing across the grain with the same grit as along the grain of clear hard maple panels conditioned at 8 percent equilibrium moisture content requires 20 to 25 percent less power. Abrasive planing across the grain with a No. 80 grit required approximately the same power as planing along the grain with a No. 36 grit. Planing across the grain with finer grits can reduce finish sanding requirements.
