Particleboard and 1/8-inch hardboard were subjected to complete equilibrium dimensional change under normal conditions which required longer time (20 to 60 days) than the 4 days for samples subjected to an accelerated cycle. The accelerated cycle chosen as the best of several, involved equalizing at 30 percent RH, equalizing 72 hours at 150?F. and 100 percent RH, cooling to 90?F. in polyethylene and measuring, and ovendrying 3 hours at 230?F. and measuring. The included table establishes the validity of the accelerated methods and justifies consideration for other rapid, low-cost research on determination of dimensional change characteristics of wood-based panel products.
