Accommodation and confrontation are inevitable as issues are addressed by society. Along with public and private land managers, the hardwood industry will have to address many issues during the 1990’s, most concerning environmental quality and economic prosperity. A good economic outlook for the hardwood industry, environmental rights and substantial national leadership form the background to resolution of the issues and to development of new alliances and partnerships. The Resources Planning Act 1990 Program and the New Perspectives approach to management make the Forest Service more open to change than ever before.
