For years, hardwoods have been planted with little or no regard for competition control. Such activities have often resulted in excessive mortality of the planted seedlings and/or overall failure of the plantation. During the past five decades, herbicides were used primarily to control hardwoods and not to promote survival and growth of these species. Land managers now recognize the importance of competition control for regeneration of hardwoods, and the need for cost-effective applications. Only recently have efforts been undertaken to evaluate herbicides to be used in establishing hardwoods.
