The application of highly accurate metal gauges in quality control was demonstrated through an example of piano manufacturing. Since piano key and action wood parts must be held to tolerances as close as 0.003 inch, rigid quality control and intensive training are necessary. Starting in the lumber yard, precision gauges were employed with rough and finished parts. Precision metal templates were used to check on machine settings and to check the sawing, drilling, routing, and frazing operations.
