In March, 1976 it was estimated that 8,000 homes had been built in the United States and Canada using the All Weather Wood Foundation system. The program of independent quality inspection for foundation lumber and plywood requires a higher preservative retention (150 percent of that usually required for ground contact applications), more restrictive penetration requirements, and restricted lists of preservatives. Lumber and plywood for foundations must be stamped with the AWPB quality control mark. It is estimated that 873 square feet of plywood are used in the average wood foundation. This use represents an entirely new market for wood products. The development points out that wood, modified by modern processing technology, can perform in applications where it could not previously be used, and that a cooperative approach is effective in developing totally new markets for wood. in developing totally new markets for wood.
