The study investigated the improvement in wear resistance of sawteeth by tipping with wear-resistant materials. Materials tested were alloys 1 (Stellite 12) and 2 (Stellite 20), which are both cobalt-based alloys but differ in hardness, and alloys 3 (Deloro 50) and 4 (Deloro 60) with nickel as the major constituent, which also differ in hardness. All four alloys were found to reduce sawtooth dulling, in comparison to standard steel sawteeth, by many times. Alloy 1 was singled out as the most effective alloy; in cutting unseasoned western redcedar, it reduced wear rate by at least 12 times. The four alloys dulled at approximately the same rate but they differed in grinding properties. Upon grinding, alloy 1 produced a cutting edge that was essentially free of edge breakage or chipping; alloys 2, 3, and 4 showed considerable edge breakage. This breakage was found to affect the degree of dullness during the whole cutting experiment which extended over 35 km or 4 hours.
