This study describes the production of 18-inch shingles from southern pine and yellow-poplar. The volume recovery for grade No. 2 or Better shingles was 56.2 percent and 53.9 percent for poplar and pine, respectively. Based on yield, the estimated cost per square for producing untreated shingles was nominally $42 and $33 for pine and poplar, respectively. A production of southern pine run using random length logs produced a slightly lower yield. It appears that shingles produced from these species can compete favorably with western redcedar in terms of milling costs.
