An analysis of shear damage at two southern pine sawmills

Lumber sawn from sheared logs at two large southern pine sawmills was examined for end defect. Shatter, present on nearly all the lumber, was effectively removed with a 6-inch trim. Drying defect and/or shake, preset on nearly one-third of the sample, generally extended farther into the lumber end than shatter. Stump-pull, a readily visible indicator of shear damage to a sawlog, was found to be ineffective as a predictor of lumber degrade caused by shatter. Finally, a kiln-cart survey procedure was developed, tested, and found to be an efficient way to monitor shear damage at a southern pine sawmill.
