The building industry is undergoing, a strong trend to the use of panel products. Many fabricating industries are also using increasing amounts of panel products. The increased use is largely because of reduced construction and fabrication labor costs. This trend has been advantageous to plywood, hardboard, particleboard, insulation board, metal, plastics, and mineral sheet products. It has been disadvantageous to lumber. The greatest encroachments from competitive products have been in industrial and commercial building, but it is anticipated that curtain walls and sandwich panels will soon find uses in residential construction. These two new panel types are now made mostly by competitors, which points to a need for wood industry research on improved panel materials.
