An Anomaly in Tracheid Anatomy in the Latewood of White Pine–A Technical Note

The increased, permeability of tracheids in the vicinity of resin canals has been noted in white pine (Pinus strobes L). Examination has revealed that in the latewood zone, these tracheids occur in lens-shaped clusters around the resin canals, that their lumen diameter is greater, and their cell walls thinner than that of latewood tracheids more remote from resin canals. The latewood tracheids in the vicinity of resin canals resemble earlywood tracheids. Photographs illustrate the observation.
