Working characteristics, strength properties, and exterior durability were determined for a new emulsion polymer/isocyanate (EPI) adhesive used to laminate composite lumber. Most favorable methods of spreading the adhesive, spread rates, closed assembly times, pressures during cure, and times of curing under pressure were determined over a range of practical manufacturing conditions. Measurements of strength and durability after accelerated laboratory testing and outdoor weathering indicated EPI bonds in composite lumber were of high structural integrity and could be exposed to direct weathering up to 1 year.
