Hardwood lumber pricing is a complex process that is easily misunderstood by those outside the hardwood industry. Prices for green and air-dried lumber published weekly by the two hardwood lumber price reporting services are conditional. The actual price of a specific shipment of lumber depends on the nature of the sale, attributes of specific shipments, market conditions, transportation costs, and the point in the distribution system at which the transaction occurs. Prices of kiln-dried lumber are reported over large ranges because of differences in product attributes and specifications of individual customer groups. Because of the conditionality of green and air-dried lumber prices and the wide range of prices for kiln-dried lumber, researchers who examined hardwood markets or develop new wood-using technologies should become familiar with the pricing process of the specific grade, species, and product under study.
