Analyzing Structure in Wood-Based Industry–Part II: Categorizing Strategic Diversity

A variety of business-level competitive strategies can coexist in an industry, but most analyses of industry structure fail to address this diversity. A study of firms in the southern plywood industry identified their strategies in 14 competitive areas. Firms were divided into five groups with different strategies. The competitive postures of these five groups can be used to analyze industry structure and responses to external events, such as technological advances or raw material discoveries.
