Animal Glues in Woodworking

Animal glues with jelly strength values ranging from 165 grams to 380 grams are usually selected in woodworking industries. The average preference is 190 to 200 grams for conifers and 250 grams for denser, close-grained wood. Temperatures for melting and storage of glues should not be over 140? to 150?F. The moisture content of the wood to be assembled should be from 6 to 10 percent and free from case hardening and stresses. The proper temperatures of the wood and the glue upon application are 70? to 90?F. and 140? to 150?F., respectively. Glues should be spread in a thin, uniform, well-distributed film. Assembly should be made as soon as the glue film begins to set. Pressures in the range of 100 to 200 lbs./sq. in. are recommended for clamping. Pressure should be applied for at least 30 minutes to 1 hour or longer. A temperature of 70? to 85?F. with a relative humidity of approximately 50 percent is the proper condition for drying after assembly. Moisture resistant animal glue joints can be made by applying formaldehyde-borax solution to one face of the joint and warm glue solution to the matching face.
