In addition to a bibliography listing 49 publications appearing during 1964-651 significant wood engineering research and development is highlighted. Initially there is a reference to the Timber Design Manual to be published in 1965-66 by the American Institute of Timber Construction and to action by lumber grading associations toward rule changes, increases in working stresses for seasoning, and load sharing. Also an indication that the controversy over green and dry lumber sizes may be resolved soon because there is now acceptance of the fact by both consumer and producer that dry lumber can be smaller than green lumber for equal strength and stiffness. There are seven general areas of wood engineering research for which contributions made during the year are cited: 1) Physical and mechanical properties, 2) general design principles, 3) nondestructive testing and machine grading, 4) building structures, 5) fabrication of laminated and composite beams, 6) performance of structures in service, and 7) trussed rafters and fasteners.
