Boric acid, TIM-BOR?, borax, and zinc borate control the surface growth of Aureobasidium-pullulans on wood when evaluated as a dip treatment in laboratory tests. The effectiveness of the first three borates is proportional to the amount of boron in pollution that results from their solubilization. A suspension of zinc borate (FIREBRAKE? ZB) controls mold growth more effectively than would be expected from its boron content. This is probably due to the zinc acting as a cobiocide, and possibly from the constant release of boric acid through hydrolysis of the salt. This maintains a higher effective concentration of borate on the wood surface.
