Most current software for computer optimization of headrig sawing decisions relies on solutions stored in look-up tables. Such solutions may result in yield losses. This study developed a method of best opening face (BOF) position determination for the cant sawing method that would eliminate the need for look-up table solutions. Reduction of computer solution time has been accomplished in research on the live sawing of hardwood saw-logs with a centered solution method. By this method, the largest possible sawing pattern is centered in the log to obtain BOF position. This procedure was modified in this study for the cant sawing of softwood sawlogs. BOF solution time was reduced by 99.6 percent when using this approach as compared to conventional BOF procedures. Board foot yield loss was 0.112 percent for opening face solutions on the log and 0.0005 percent for solutions on the cant. These results indicate that the centered solution method can significantly reduce computer time required to determine BOF position with little loss in lumber yield.
