Unseasoned sapwood of radiata pine (Pinus radiata D. Don) from New Zealand is highly susceptible to discoloration caused by a plethora of mold, staining fungi, and decay fungi. A newly developed antisapstain treatment called Sentry?, which contains a mobile fungicide (methyl bisthiocyanate) and a non-mobile fungicide (2-n-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one), was evaluated for its ability to arrest fungal pre-infections in logs and lumber and provide protection for 16 weeks. After 16 weeks, Sentry, but not the benchmark product also tested, gave satisfactory protection from wood-inhabiting fungi to logs even when they were held for up to 2 days in the summer and up to 10 days in the winter prior to antisapstain treatment. For sawn radiata pine, spread of fungal infection through block-stacked lumber was contained with the use of Sentry.
