Austria is the third largest (after Sweden and Finland) supplier of forest products to Europe. The Austrian Wood Research Society was established in 1946 and from that evolved the Austrian Wood Research Institute. The Institute, which started functioning in October 1953, is located in Vienna and comprises several two-story buildings of a total of 100 rooms, A staff of 40 persons operates the institute. About $5,000,000 worth of equipment and machinery including outdoor testing grounds is available. The Institute consists of seven divisions: 1) Central Library and Documentation, 2) Microscopy and Structural Wood Research, 3) Wood Chemistry and Chemical Technology, 4) Wood Preservation, 5) Pulp and Paper Division, 6) Mechanical Technology, and 7) Glues, Plywood, Fiber and Particleboards. An eighth division, Development of New Measuring Methods, is being established.
