Swelling properties, shear strength, and wood and cell wall specific gravity of bark were determined for: Pinus ponderosa Laws. (ponderosa pine); Pinus lambertiana Dougl. (sugar pine); Pinus jeffreyi Grey. and Balf. (Jeffrey pine); Libocedrus decurrens Torr. (incense-cedar); Sequoia sempervirens (D. Don) Endl. (redwood, old growth); Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco. (Douglas-fir); Abies magnifica L. Nurr. (California red fir); and Abies concolor (Gord. and Glend.) Lindl. (white fir). A better understanding of the basic physical and mechanical properties of these barks may contribute to increased utilization. Specimens from mill site and from standing trees were compared.
