Based on the general work discussed in this report, the following range of specifications for a production thick slicer can be recommended: (1) pressure bar type: conventional, along or with some restraint; (2) knife bevel angle: 200; (3) pressure bar compression range: 5 to 20 percent of feed; (4) pressure bar lead range: zero to 0.3-inch; (5) knife or wood inclination angle: 3? to 50?; (6) velocity range for highest quality: 5 to 200 fpm; (7) feed thickness range: 1/4- to 3/4-inch; and (8) index method: from previous-cut surface. The machine design should be such that the flitch is totally backed up during cutting with the knife cutting into a slot or cutting bar. An alternative would be the feeding of flitches one behind the other with cutting being done continuously. Typical maximum forces when cutting 1/2-inch-thick material were 650 lb/in of length perpendicular to the cutting direction and 450 lb/in parallel to the cutting direction. For 1-inch-thick material, these forces were 950 lb/in of length and 650 lb/in of length. These forces are expected operating forces. Any factors for overload and safety must be added. Specific horsepower requirements for 1/2-inch material is 2.11 hp/cu ft/min; for 1-inch material, 1.68 hp/cu ft/min. These power figures are net; additional power for friction and other losses must be added.
