The results of bioassay tests indicate that a quick method for determination of the relative initial preservative potential of creosote and creosote-petroleum mixtures may be available to the wood-preserving industry. ODPN-insoluble test values are related to the expected unweathered block thresholds that might be obtained by soil-block bioassay. The same relationship holds for glycol-insoluble values. A glycol-insoluble index of 53 or less corresponds generally to a satisfactory whole creosote. The petroleum with glycol-insoluble indices higher than 86 will have high thresholds usually, indicating unsatisfactory preservative performance. A creosote or a blend of questionable preservative potential would fall into a transitional zone of 54 to 85. This is an intermediate threshold position and suggests questionable field performance.
