Compares caulless press operation with typical caul system and describes a newly designed single-opening press line established in Germany. Most all the detrimental effects of thickness tolerance, excess trim allowance, warp, and production costs of replacement and maintenance with cauls have been eliminated by the caulless process. A newly designed press at Springe, West Germany is 7 feet wide and 25 feet long. Another, is 8.5 by 42 feet in size. With this large perimeter board being produced, it now reaches a productive capacity equal to a 4 by 16 foot, 14 opening caul plant if only 1/2 inch and thinner boards are to be compared in productivity. With this product not requiring the costly sanding operation and presenting a smooth surface for direct printing applications, this industry is prepared to capture more attractive markets with a lower cost of production.
