A study was made of the causes of seasoning defects in air seasoning lumber stacks of birch, oak, maple, and walnut for chair stock. The stacking method in use indicated that there was a concentration of seasoning checking in the upper portion of every stack; wide boards on the edges showed more checking than the same width boards in the centers. The stack slope from front to rear was changed and a top devised to give ventilation at the top of the stack and also prevent the rain and snow from entering. With the new stacks there was no pattern of season checking as found previously. The installation of temperature controller-recorders in the steam bending room resulted in the elimination of the outbreaks of high bending losses in the manufacture of chairs.
