This paper reviews the present status of the properties and structure of southern pine barks. Bark structure is summarized through light- and electron-microscopic photographs. Bark density, moisture relations, thermal and mechanical properties are presented. Bark structure and properties are compared with those of the wood. In general, barks are less anisotropic than wood, exhibit slightly lower heat transfer coefficients than woods, and are much weaker in all mechanical properties than woods.
