Fifty-four 4/4 red oak boards, 8 feet in length were dried using an accelerated drying schedule. One surface on each board was planed to produce a smooth surface and the other surface left rough. The number of checks produced were counted at different times during the kiln row. Results clearly show that the planed surface checked less than the rough surface.
