Reviews production techniques involved in applying and curing coatings on plywood, hardboard, particleboard, and lumber. Since all the coating formulations are based on compromise, the present polyester systems sacrifice some stain resistance for much greater toughness in the same way that the catalyzed alkyd amine systems sacrifice film toughness for greater stain resistance. The property of stain resistance is not important in fillers, so the basic concepts of 100 percent solids, inherent toughness, and excellent appearance will find a ready market. The topcoat toughness, coupled with the economy of the thin film, will interest many board prefinishers.
