There are two classes of end coatings: cold coatings which are liquid at room temperature and hot coatings which are solid at room temperature and must be applied hot. Cold coatings are usually applied by brush or spray to logs and lumber. Hot coatings are suited for small stock than can be easily handled and are usually applied by dipping. Information is from Technical Note No. 186, Forest Products Laboratory, USDA Forest Service, Madison, Wisconsin Revised July 1953.
