Estimates of merchantable timber inventory were evaluated on active logging operations throughout the forested region of Texas. An overview of current logging practices is provided. Actual harvest volumes and merchantability statistics are compared with conventional timber inventory criteria. Total estimated merchantable timber inventory volume was within 2 percent of the actual volume harvested, but estimates varied by product cut. In general, estimates of timber inventory overestimated actual softwood harvests and underestimated hardwood harvests.
