Radial and tangential shear and shear at 45? to the annual rings of southern pine were evaluated using the standard 2- by 2-inch shear block and experimental 2- by 1-1/2-inch specimens. No significant differences were observed at the five percent probability level between results from the standard and the undersized samples for any of the three shear planes. It is concluded that 2-by 1-1/2-inch specimens can be used in place of the current standard 2-by 2-inch to evaluate shear properties of dimension lumber. These results will be useful for interpreting the results of shear block tests from full-size pieces of lumber.
