Comparison of clamping time requirements for a ring porous (red oak) and a diffuse porous (sugar maple) hardwood glued with a vinyl type adhesive showed that the red oak required approximately twice the clamping time to develop 50 percent of its 8 hour strength than did the maple. Density gradients between springwood and summerwood in oak are suggested as a reason for the longer clamp time required by the ring porous wood.
