The technical and economic feasibility of producing construction grade plywood from low-grade Appalachian oak were determined by processing a sample of factory grade 3 oak logs through a typical southern pine sheathing plant and by calculating production costs and break-even prices for the plywood products. The machinery and plant processes used for southern pine plywood production were found adaptable to oak plywood production, and veneer from factory grade 3 oak logs was sufficient to make the plywood product competitive to softwood plywood. However, glue bond test results indicated a need for a more effective low cost waterproof adhesive for oak and a need to develop standards that will apply directly to the glue line quality required for construction grade hardwood plywood.
