Fire tests are made at the Underwriters’ Laboratories, Inc. on composite fire doors consisting of a manufactured core with steel or impregnated wood edges and veneer faces of wood, plastic, or metal. The doors, installed in standard test frames are subjected to fire until the exposure period of the desired classification or rating is reached. Immediately after the fire test, a hose stream is directed at the door; the pressure and duration of the stream are governed by the size of the door and the rating classification. Conditions of acceptance, which limit the amount of movement of the door, are enumerated. An Underwriter’s Laboratory label essentially states that the door was manufactured in accordance with specifications derived from the fire door actually tested; the label does not protect against alteration or misuse of the door, nor improper installation or maintenance.
