Due to variation of moisture content in boards dried in kilns, the need arose to develop a moisture meter to detect wet boards. The moisture meter works through an electrode scanning device. Its response is proportional to the quantity or mass of water in the electrode field. The instrument is adjusted to a maximum moisture level, and levels above this point trigger a signal which activates a marking device. Variations of such instruments can be used for moisture detection in veneer, paper, and lumber. Removal or redrying materials above tolerable moisture contents can eliminate the occurrence of many problems in further manufacturing.
