In the laboratory, it was shown that Poria carbonica cultures were killed by exposure to methyl bromide whether growing on, agar or wood. Best results were obtained by use of a mixture of methyl bromide and ammonia, indicating that quaternary ammonium salts are the effective agents. Permanency of treatment is improved by use of sulfuryl fluoride. The manuscript details test methods, methods for treating poles in the ground and poles in storage. The recommended treatment requires 50 pounds of methyl bromide and 48 pounds of ammonia per 1,000 cubic feet of wood. Tests on treated wood were made for 15 months after treatment, indicating fungistatic and fungicidal properties had been imparted to the wood. Little or no effect on wood physical properties was found.
