Since sawmill operations rely on stockpiling of logs and lumber for efficient operations, it is necessary to develop economical measures to prevent insect and fungus attack. A large variety of insecticides were tested in this study as protection of the southern hardwood species from attacks of beetles such as the ambrosia beetles Xyleborus affinis Eich. (family Scolytidae) and Platypus composites Say (Platypodidae); the red-shouldered beetle Xylobiops basilaris Say (family Bostrichidae); the long-horned borers(Cerambycidae); the flatheads (Buprestidae); sawyers (Monochamus spp.); and Ips spp. Given in the paper are details on amounts of insecticide used, method of application, costs of the various insecticides, and a few sources of supply. All test applications were found effective in preventing attack by insects and fungi.
