This paper contains descriptions of various gluing equipment including the carrier clamp, platen presses of the steam-heated and RF type. Regardless of the method of manufacture there are certain fundamental principles that must be followed in order to obtain satisfactory results. 1) The stack to be glued must be relatively flat. 2) The edges must be square and straight. 3) The mating surfaces must be smooth. 4) Moisture content of the lumber must be between 6 and 10 percent. 5) Sufficient down pressure must be available to flatten out the individual boards in relation to each other. 6) Edge pressure must be adequate (usually around 200 psi) to force adjacent edges into intimate contact with each other. 7) The proper selection of the adhesive is very important. 8) The glue spread must be maintained at not only the correct amount but it must be uniform. 9) Sufficient curing time for the glue must be allowed while the joint is still under pressure. 10) After removal from pressure a further curing period should be allowed consistent with the requirements and performance of the end product.
