The author stresses a four point evaluation program involving laboratory tests, test plot exposure of small stakes and round posts, and documented service tests of treated commercial units. Test methods are discussed and sample current tests are examined for significance and possible correlation of the test results. Laboratory soil-block cultures yield results that can apparently be correlated with test plot and pole line experience with creosote. The soil-block test can be used to determine preservative threshold retentions, i.e., how much of a given preservative must be retained by the wood at treatment to insure preservative effectiveness. Laboratory and correlated test plot experiments should be supplemented when practicable with documented tests of commercial units.
