High feed-speed moulders were developed on the West coast for mills having lumber of long lengths. The machines are designed with a hopper or belt feed with cutting heads designed for the feed speed. Top and bottom heads are mounted in an easily removable aluminum ball-bearing yoke, thus facilitating ease of sharpening or changes in set-up. Side heads are mounted on a tapered non-whipping spindle. Ease of sharpening and set-up change is also available on the side heads. Use of the high feed-speed moulder cuts down on the labor force needed for operation and also the power consumption, hence cutting costs. It is recommended that feed speed be as near maximum as possible, but not faster than permissible for proper feeding, in order to cut down on knife-marked material.
