This paper compares costs of two methods for laminating thick veneer. In one method, a phenol-resorcinol adhesive is used, the press is unheated, and the adhesive is cured by the heat remaining in the veneer (residual heat) from drying. In the second method, a plywood phenolic adhesive is used, and the press is heated to supplement the residual heat of the veneer in order to cure the adhesive. The second method offers large savings in adhesive costs, in the range of $25 to $35 per 1,000 square feet of glueline. Additional energy is required for veneer drying and hot pressing with this method, but the cost is negligible. Drying times tend to be longer, but press times may be shorter, depending on veneer temperature. In some cases the production rate would increase.
