Experience of many researchers has indicated that the field threshold for residual creosote in old southern pine poles at groundline is approximately 5 pounds per cubic foot. An investigation of the groundline areas of 13 culled (for decay) southern pine poles was made as an additional check of the validity of this field threshold value. The results corroborate the groundline field threshold value of 5 pounds per cubic foot for residual creosote in old southern pine poles. The significance of this field threshold value is that the cost of ascertaining the condition of such poles by a utility engaged in a pole inspection and maintenance program can be reduced considerably.
