The 1980’s was a period of substantial growth in hardwood lumber demand and production. However, while some markets for hardwood lumber grew substantially, others declined. Similarly, hardwood stumpage log and lumber prices also increased but not for all species. This paper examines changes in hardwood lumber demand, production, and price and the hardwood cycle that underlies many of the cyclic changes occurring in the hardwood market. The concluding section discusses some of the emerging trends that will affect the hardwood market in the coming decade.
