The exact analysis of plates and shelves used in furniture construction requires the use of computationally complex methods which do not lend themselves to practical design purposes. Furthermore, because of their complexity, a number of cases have not been solved. In this paper, a simplified method analysis is presented and a number of typical design problems solved. Results of these analyses indicate that considerable material can be saved and performance greatly improved through the use of proper end and intermediate supports for shelves.
