Hydrolytic phenomena in degradation of particleboard have been examined. Hydrolytic polymer breakdown is the cause of formaldehyde split-off and decreases in mechanical properties (particularly IB and MOR) of urea-formaldehyde resin bonded particleboards. Common factors related to in-plant degradation problems are moisture content, temperature, and acidity of catalysts. These factors can be controlled by controlling pressing, stacking, and resin catalyzation practices during manufacture, storage, and exposure of boards.
