This paper presents a summary of the market potential structural design considerations, construction methods, comparative cost analysis, and performance evaluations resulting from a cooperative research program to study the feasibility of using treated wood foundations for houses. Three houses were built for study purposes using treated wood foundations, and one concrete masonry house served as a control. Each house was financed with a loan insured by the Federal Housing Administration Experimental Housing Program under Section 233 of the National Housing Act. Results to date indicate that there are many advantages to builders using the wood foundation system due to the favorable cost and performance of the treated wood foundation as compared to conventional foundation systems.
