Small hygroscopic expansion coefficients of wood and wood products can be determined by laminating thin (1/8-inch) strips of the material to be tested to thin (26 gage) steel strips and by measuring the curvature of the laminate strip which develops in response to an increase in moisture content of the wood strip. The expansion coefficient of the wood or wood material can then be calculated. The same method can be used for determining the difference between expansion coefficients of similar materials by laminating thin strips of these materials to one another. Comparison of values obtained by this method with those obtained by direct measurement of the free expansion showed good agreement.
